Amelia Byrne – Rising Clerking Stars: Career Inspiration and Advice from the Next Generation

Following exam results days taking place recently, we’re continuing our series shining a spotlight on some of the future stars of the clerking world 🌟

We want to show those considering their next steps that university isn’t the only route to a successful career –  and that you don’t need previous legal experience to find your place, build your skills and progress within the profession.

𝐍𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐮𝐩: Amelia Byrne, 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐭 Monckton Chambers.

After completing her A-Levels, Amelia worked in retail before hearing about clerking through a family friend in the industry. With no previous legal experience, she was drawn to a career in chambers because it sounded vibrant, fast-paced and people-focused, with clear opportunities for progression. She also knew she wanted to build a career in London, work as part of a team and find a role where she could play to one of her biggest strengths – working with people.

Amelia joined Monckton Chambers in April 2025 as part of the junior clerking team, where her responsibilities include assisting barristers to and from Court, liaising with Court staff and supporting the wider clerking team with barristers’ diaries and client relationships.

A year into her clerking career, Amelia is thriving – and her advice to others considering taking that first step is…

My advice would be to be open-minded, be yourself and be confident in what you have to offer. If like me, you may have no prior experience in law/ University may not be for you, but that should not discourage you from exploring a career in law and clerking! The best way forward is to showcase your personality, enthusiasm to learn and capability to adapt well to new environments.

• Invest your time into researching clerking and the specific chambers that you’d like to apply for
