In Conversation with Nneka Akudolu KC

This October, to mark Black History Month UK, we’ve been speaking with inspiring individuals across chambers and the wider legal community to hear about their journeys, reflections, and what this month means to them.

We’re honoured to feature Nneka Akudolu KC, a leading Silk at 2 Hare Court, Chambers of Jonathan Laidlaw KC, celebrated for her fearless defence work, tactical brilliance, and commitment to diversity at the Bar.

👉 Nneka’s route to the Bar was far from traditional. Leaving school with just four GCSEs, she later returned to education through an access course, went on to study Law and Politics at Cardiff, and was called to the Bar in 2002. Two decades later, following an extraordinary career in criminal law, she took silk on her first application – a testament to her resilience and drive.

Nneka lives by the mantra: “If opportunity doesn’t knock, create your own door.” As a single mother studying for the Bar, she learned early on that success requires initiative and courage – that waiting for permission or opportunity is rarely an option.

Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Standing Firm in Power and Pride,” Nneka defines it as presence and permanence: “We’re not just breaking barriers; we’re redefining what normal looks like. Visibility matters, and those who follow can see what’s possible without apology or hesitation.”

Her words embody the strength, grace, and leadership that continue to inspire the next generation at the Bar.

We’re incredibly grateful to Nneka for taking part in this series, for paving the way, and for continuing to inspire others through her example and leadership.

Stay tuned for more stories throughout the month as we continue to celebrate the power, pride, and contributions of Black professionals across the Bar.
