36 Group currently seek an Assistant First Junior Clerk to join their well-respected clerking team and members. They are a committed and vibrant team providing the highest level of service in all they do. This is an excellent opportunity for a clerk with 3-5 years of experience to progress their career in a highly efficient and professional set.
Reports to: – Senior Clerk Family
Primary responsibilities: –
- The diary is split into two groups Short Term (0-3 weeks) and Long Term (3 weeks to 6 months). You will be assisting the Deputy Senior Clerk in the management of the long-term diary (3 weeks to 6 months) or to have responsibility of the long term diary in the absence of the Deputy Senior Clerk. This includes (in consultation with the Deputy Senior Clerk):
- case allocation
- checking whether matters are still effective
- setting down brief deemed delivered dates on private matters
- dealing with diary clashes as early as possible.
- The successful candidate will also assist with the short time diary in times of absence or as requested.
- To have joint responsibility with the Deputy Senior Clerk and First Junior Clerk of agreeing all fees for private cases
- Attend multiple marketing events throughout the year, which on average equates to around once or twice a week
- Work alongside the Senior Clerk in maintaining and developing relationships with solicitors based in the East Midlands
- Ensure the fair allocation of appropriate work to members consistent with their development requirements and/or in the interests of the team
- To assist in the training and supervision of the more junior clerks
To work in consultation with all relevant staff to:-
- Identify work development and marketing opportunities and report to the Senior Clerk
- Attend relevant work or practice development meetings, seminars or functions as necessary
- The fixing of cases in all levels of Family Courts, from the Magistrates to the Supreme Court
Other responsibilities: –
- To be aware of all relevant payment regimes & rates and how they operate although the responsibility for billing cases lies with the Fees Dept.
- To keep up to date with all changes in policy and procedure both internally and externally and suggest review/changes when appropriate.
- To provide cover for other members of the Family clerking team during periods of annual leave, illness or busy times, including deputising for the First Junior Clerk
- To attend team, clerking or individual barrister meetings as required or requested.
- To undertake such further tasks and duties as the Senior or Deputy Senior Clerk may reasonably request, from time to time.

Person Specification: –
Education
- 5 GCES/GCSE or equivalent at grade C or above.
Communication
- Excellent communication skills with a high standard of spoken and written English and an excellent telephone manner.
- Keeps people informed and shares information.
- Able to deal with a wide range of people effectively.
Enthusiastic with a positive can-do attitude
- Polite and friendly manner and ability to deal with professional clients on the phone and in person.
- Willingness to learn and take on additional duties.
- Pro-active and personable with a good sense of humour.
Quality and organised approach to work
- Able to multi-task, prioritise and take responsibility for own work.
- Takes a quality approach with great attention to detail and high levels of accuracy.
- Self-motivated and able to work under pressure and make accurate decisions.
- Good organisational and administrative skills.
- Tenacious in approach to getting work done.
IT skills and Numeric
- Preferably trained to use the LEX system, otherwise training will be given.
- Computer skills including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
- Adept at learning new ways of working and new IT systems.
Team skills
- A good team member who can forge strong working relationships with colleagues, barristers and Chambers clients and supervise more junior members of the team.
Negotiating and Persuading
- Good at negotiating and persuading both internal and external clients.
Other
- Experience of working in a professional office environment is essential as is awareness of good client care standards and working practices.
