Chambers is currently seeking a Junior Clerk to provide support in the operation of the clerks room and to members of chambers as required. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual looking to begin their clerking career.

About the Role:
  • Delivering members of chambers papers to court (High Court, Tribunal or Supreme Court) and collecting them at the end of the day; ensuring that arrangements are in place the night before, where possible.
  • Preparing authority bundles, both in hard copy and e-bundles, including side-lining and highlighting; finding statutory law and case materials, using library facilities (internal and external) and the internet.
  • Lodging skeleton arguments and bundles of authorities in court and/or online using the court CE system, or by email; sealing orders and ensuring that receipts are obtained for all lodged documents.
  • Printing documents for members of chambers and clerks; organising papers into indexed bundles
  • Assisting with basic diary management tasks, when asked by the team clerks, to include fixing and obtaining daily listings and
  • Dealing with all incoming and outgoing post, and deliveries, ensuring that anything incoming is delivered to the recipient promptly; ensuring that the franking machine is always in credit; And that the post tray is empty at the end of each day; taking special delivery items to the Post Office in good time, ensuring a receipt/proof of postage is obtained;
  • Placing stationery orders and ensuring that all items are always well stocked and available to members of chambers and staff;
  • Liaison with office equipment suppliers over maintenance issues and ensuring that faulty equipment is repaired asap, keeping members and staff updated on the current status.
  • Maintaining the photocopy rooms as fit for purpose e.g. keeping the rooms tidy, including all stationery ensuring photocopiers are full of paper etc. at the end of each day;
  • Arranging for return/secure disposal of papers/maintaining regular shredding collections
  • General duties including but not limited to collecting lunch for members of chambers when necessary; assisting with the reconfiguration of the conference rooms; assisting with clearing dead papers from members rooms
  • Working alongside clerking teams and assisting generally with duties eg entering time sheets and entering instructions using the LEX system.
General:
  • A part of the Junior Clerking Team and in common with all other staff, you will need to work within chambers agreed policies and procedures particularly in the following areas: Equality and Diversity, Fair Allocation of Work, Anti-Bullying and Harassment, Health and Safety etc. and will be required to follow agreed best practice standards at all times. You will also be expected to act respectfully towards all members of chambers, clients and staff.
  • The Junior Clerking Team will be expected to work in conjunction with the Team Leaders/Team Assistants with the entering of time sheets, entering of instructions, arranging and attending listing appointments.
  • The Junior Clerking Team, in common with all staff, may be expected to work extend hours as and when the need arises
  • Confidentiality of both clients and the management committee is of vital importance. You will therefore be required to sign a confidentiality undertaking.
  • Chambers is a professional organisation, and expects all staff to present themselves, both in person and in communication with clients and suppliers in a professional manner at all times.
Competency Requirements:
  • Educated to A level, or equivalent standard, with a minimum requirement of 5 GCSE grades of A-C
  • Knowledge of the Court system and basic procedures, in particular the civil divisions of Royal Courts of Justice an advantage.
  • Organisation skills: ability to prioritise and manage your own time and workload effectively.
  • Demonstrate ability to work well under considerable pressure.
  • Ability to take responsibility for yourself and your workload.
  • Communication skills: ability to be articulate and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Personal effectiveness: ability to use own initiative and pursue duties with enthusiasm and commitment. Show flexibility to new demands and change.
