Monckton Chambers is a leading set of barristers chambers, based in London. They practise across a wide range of commercial and civil law, with a particular focus on EU, competition, commercial litigation and arbitration, VAT, other indirect taxes and public & administrative law.
In addition, Monckton Chambers is recognised as a market leader in specialist advocacy, advisory and dispute-resolution services. They are renowned for their intellectual rigour, commercial focus and ability to get results. They act for private sector clients (from multinationals to SMEs and private individuals), the UK Government, regulators, local authorities, NGOs and non-UK bodies, including foreign states and the EU institutions.
There are currently 70 members of Chambers, including 27 KCs and 8 door tenants, aided by an outstanding team of clerks and support staff, all committed to providing the highest level of service to our clients.
JOB MISSION
To provide high grade administrative support services to the Barristers and support teams at a leading set of Barristers’ Chambers.
Hours: By rotation on a shift basis: between 8.30am to 6.30 pm
JOB DESCRIPTION
Responsibilities:
- In conjunction with the other junior clerks safely and securely transport to and from court/tribunal all of the barristers’ papers, books and materials etc as necessary.
- Answer incoming telephone calls in a professional manner and transfer accordingly.
- Receive and organise the sending of national and international courier deliveries.
- Be aware of staff and members’ whereabouts and update the LEX diary accordingly.
- Keep the second entrance and all “client” areas tidy and presentable at all times.
- Assist with the maintenance of chambers “aesthetics”, cleanliness and report to the Administrator when unsatisfactory.
- Package and process post/DX attending the post/DX office as required. Distribute post every morning and throughout the day as necessary.
- Assist in completing copying requests as required which may include binding, index preparation etc. assist with copier maintenance, keeping glass/surface clean, remove paper clips, staples etc. Order and keep check on copier supplies i.e. toner, developer, paper etc.
- Routinely check stock levels of all general office supplies, first aid supplies, copier paper, toilet supplies, refreshments/kitchen supplies (tea, coffee etc.)
- Keep supply and storage areas tidy.
- Ensure that all bundles are prepared well in advance of trial in order that they are ready to be taken to court, making sure counsel have stowaways and boxes in advance.
- Dealing with any other queries/ tasks from member of chambers.
- Assist with sending back old papers to solicitors at the conclusion of a case or as and when they are requested; securely shredding confidential documents.
- Preparing authorities bundles as and when required.
- Lodging skeleton arguments and other court documents as required.
- Printing off and bundling papers that have been received electronically.
- General responsibility for chambers’ facilities, changing light bulbs etc and reporting to the Facilities Clerk and Administrator as and when appropriate.
- Assist as appropriate in the planning and coordinating of office events.
- Assist as appropriate with the setup of refreshments for chambers conference rooms.
- Assist with mail-outs.
- Assist with maintenance and update of Chambers client database.
- Ensure that the administrative needs of members and senior personnel are adequately handled and offer secretarial support as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Highly desirable:
- A-Level educated (Previous experience may be substituted).
Desirable:
- Previous work experience in an equivalent position providing both reception cover and general office experience.
- Experience of Microsoft packages, particularly Word and Excel.

Desirable:
- Experience of multi-line phone systems.
