About Chambers
Our client is one of the leading sets of Commercial and Chancery chambers and is noted for its strength in offshore and international cases. They currently seek a Practice Manager to provide, with all staff, an efficient and effective service to clients and Members of Chambers and in doing so provide an enjoyable and productive working environment. Furthermore, to contribute to the development of a highly able, cohesive and supportive clerking and administration team. OVERALL
- Provide, with all staff, an efficient and effective service to clients and Members of Chambers and in so doing provide an enjoyable and productive working environment.
- Contribute to the development of a highly able, cohesive, and supportive clerking and administration team in Chambers.
Key Elements of the Role:
Clerking:
- Negotiate and agree terms of work and set brief fees in respect of all barristers within your group at the correct time.
- Allocate all incoming instructions and briefs to appropriate barristers (taking into consideration the wishes of the client, barristers practices and practice development).
- Plan ahead to ensure that all deadlines are met, monitor work in progress and, where necessary, chase barristers for the return of their work in a systematic way.
- Ensure that lodging of documents is done correctly at all times.
- Monitor all diary entries effecting your group and liaise with instructing clients to ensure all briefs are received promptly to allow sufficient preparation time for hearings.
- Ensure that all relevant and helpful information is entered onto the computer system and that the computer system is up to date at all times.
- Co-ordinate and arrange travel and accommodation for Barristers as and when required.
- Respond to all queries raised in respect of work billed.
- Liaise with the Assistant Practice Manager regarding all forthcoming appointments to fix for members of your group with an aim to achieving the most suitable dates wherever possible.
- Ensure that you and the clerks working with you meet clerking standards developed within chambers and keep to written or good clerking practice systems and procedures; contribute to the development of such standards, systems and procedures.
- Ensure that you have a clear understanding of the systems, rules and procedures for the Bar Direct scheme, Terms of work provisions governing services to solicitors, Conditional Fee Agreements and the rules governing services to foreign lawyers and overseas clients.
Practice Development:
- Work with the senior leadership team to proactively manage practices by developing and keeping good working relationships with barristers in your group through discussing their practices with them regularly and keeping them informed of the status of their diaries.
- Take an active approach by looking for opportunities to develop the practices of the barristers in your group when talking with clients.
- Keep abreast of the practices of barristers not in your group by talking with the clerking team.
Management of Clerking Team:
- Support, train and oversee those in more junior roles to you and provide guidance and assistance to improve their skills in operational areas of time and task management including practice and client development.
Marketing:
- Contribute to marketing plans; assist with the running of any marketing initiatives as and when required to grow individual, team and chambers profile.
- Assist with the reception of clients and visitors to Chambers as and when required; look for opportunities to meet with key clients when they visit Chambers.
- Working alongside and support any client initiatives as supported / directed by the senior leadership team in order to develop new and existing relationships.
Training & Personal Development:
- Look for opportunities to improve your own understanding, skills and abilities through reading articles, discussing issues with barristers and senior members of staff, in house training events and external courses.
