Job Title: Senior Practice Manager

Reports to: Director of Clerking

Job Summary:

The Senior Practice Manager is responsible for the day to day management, direction and oversight of the clerking teams. They will support and work with the Director of Clerking to provide leadership and strategic direction in practice management, business development, marketing, and team management. Acting as a central figure in Chambers, the Senior Practice Manager will ensure efficient and effective service delivery to barristers, clients, and staff while driving Chambers growth and reputation in the legal market.

Key Responsibilities:

Practice Management

  • Maintain an excellent, professional working relationship with Members of Chambers.
  • Oversee the actioning of individual Practice Review Meetings with all Members of Chambers, at least annually, to assess and develop their practices. Prepare reports, set goals, and implement actionable plans aligned with Chambers Business and Marketing Plans from time to time. Delegate routine reviews to Team Leaders and attend meetings as required to ensure effective practice management.
  • Oversee diary management processes, ensuring the effective and fair allocation of work, minimisation of diary clashes, and timely handling of commitments.
  • Oversee and ensure professional and effective fee negotiation processes
  • Monitor and report on individual practices, ensuring fair allocation of work and alignment with Members aspirations.
  • Facilitate in conjunction with the relevant Team Leaders the re-establishment of practices following periods of leave and support Members well-being and work-life balance aspirations.
  • Ensure compliance with chambers policies and with professional, contractual, and regulatory obligations across all clerking activities.

Business Development & Marketing

  • Collaborate with the Director of Clerking and Marketing Director to develop and implement Chambers’ marketing, business development and growth strategies both domestically and internationally.
  • Identify and act on opportunities to enhance client relationships and approach new prospective clients
  • Represent Chambers at conferences, seminars, and networking events.
  • Drive cross-selling initiatives and the promotion of Chambers members, associate members and arbitrators across key client groups.
  • Monitor market trends, conduct research, and produce reports on potential new work streams and business opportunities.

Team Management

  • Support the Director of Clerking by leading, managing, and developing the practice management teams, ensuring high standards of professionalism and service delivery.
  • Line manage the Deputy Senior Practice Manager and Team Leaders.
  • Conduct regular structured appraisals, set goals, and provide ongoing feedback to practice management team members.
  • Organise and lead regular team meetings to share updates, address challenges, and identify opportunities.
  • Assist in the recruitment, training, and development of staff.
  • Work with the Finance Director and Fees team to minimise aged debt and ensure efficient fee collection processes.

Communication and Reporting

  • Ensure effective communication within Chambers, providing Members with regular updates on clerking activities, marketing efforts, and client feedback.
  • Create a culture of openness and collaboration between Members and staff.
  • Produce reports on clerking activities, outstanding work, and financial performance as required.

General Responsibilities

  • Attend senior management meetings as required, providing strategic input and represent the clerking team.
  • Organise the management and resolution of complaints from clients or Members promptly and effectively.
  • Promote and implement Chambers values, policies, and procedures across all activities.
  • Act as a key member of Chambers senior management team, contribute to strategic decision-making and leadership initiatives.

Person Specification:

  • Proven experience in a senior clerking or senior practice management position within a Chambers or similar legal environment.
  • Strong leadership skills with a track record of managing teams effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain professional relationships with clients, barristers, and staff.
  • Commercial acumen with expertise in fee negotiation, financial oversight, and business development.
  • Strategic thinking and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • In-depth understanding of the legal sector and regulatory obligations, with familiarity in marketing and business development best practices.
