Stress Awareness Month: Supporting Ourselves and Each Other in Chambers

April is Stress Awareness Month – an important time to reflect on how we manage stress in the fast-paced, often high-pressure environment of chambers. Whether you’re a barrister, clerk, or support staff, stress can impact your wellbeing and performance. Here’s how we can all look after ourselves—and how chambers can help create a healthier workplace for everyone.

🔹 What individuals can do:

  • Set boundaries: It’s okay to say no, protect your downtime, and take proper breaks.
  • Stay organised: Prioritise tasks, use tools to manage deadlines, and ask for help when needed.
  • Look after your body and mind: Regular movement, fresh air, and small moments of calm (even just deep breaths) can go a long way.
  • Talk to someone: Whether it’s a colleague, friend, or professional, you don’t have to carry stress alone.

🔹 What chambers can do:

  • Encourage open conversations about stress and mental health—especially from senior leadership.
  • Promote work-life balance by respecting working hours and discouraging a culture of overwork.
  • Invest in support: Provide access to wellbeing resources, mentoring schemes, or mental health first aiders.
  • Design with people in mind: Quiet spaces, flexible working options, and inclusive policies can help everyone thrive.

Reducing stress isn’t just a personal responsibility – it’s a shared one. When chambers invest in wellbeing, everyone benefits.
